After pupils can recall a fact, these example discussion starters show how a teacher might invite them to use and explain it.
What's the same?
Compare 7 × 6 and 6 × 7.
A pupil might say: “They use the same factors and make the same total, even though the groups are arranged differently.”
What's different?
Compare 4 × 9 and 4 × 10.
A pupil might say: “The second has one more group of 4, so the products differ by 4.”
How do you know?
Work out 9 × 8 without counting in eights.
A pupil might say: “I know 10 × 8 is 80, so I take away one group of 8 to get 72.”
